Call for articles for a Special Issue on 40th Anniversary of the ISSN network: an appraisal

Dec. 8th, 2014

Since its inception in the 1970s, the ISO standard ISSN has remained an essential identifier for print and online
serials and continuing resources worldwide. The main value of this identifier relies on the quality of the
metadata provided by trained library professionals around the globe. The ISO network, that currently
comprises 88 national centres and the International centre based in Paris, will celebrate its 40th anniversary in
2015. A special issue of the journal Ciência da Informação (ISSN: 1518-8353) will be published by the
Brazilian Institute of Science and Technology Information (IBICT), research unit of the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Innovation in Brazil, to mark this occasion.

IBICT would like to collect contributions that will trace back the evolution of ISSN and discuss its place
among the current ecosystem of serials publishing and information identifiers. The following topics can be
addressed by authors:

- Key events and key people in the history of ISSN network: though there have been many articles about ISSN
as a standard, the organization of the network per se has not raised so much interest; ISSN network archives,
kept at ISSN IC offices in Paris, could be searched to provide new insights on the governance of the network
and on international cooperation regarding bibliographic control.

- The history of ISSN national centres in their host institutions shall focus on a few centres and explain their
achievements, their constraints and their place in the host organizations using archives as research material.
The sample could include centers based in national libraries, scientific institutions and book chambers.

- From microfiches, tapes & CD-ROMs to online database and OAI-PMH, the technical evolution of the ISSN
register can be recalled while also delineating some future perspectives with an Open Access flavor.

- How do libraries and union catalogues use ISSN? Cataloguing, digitization programs, link solvers, A-Z
listings, discovery services, identifier assignment: ISSN is versatile and so are its uses. Through testimonies
and best use cases, articles shall give an overview of library practices through the lens of ISSN.

- ISSN in the publishing industry: why and how do JSTOR, Springer and other information services use ISSN?
Testimonies from executives with various stakeholders shall prove the importance of ISSN.

- ISSN and its relationships with other identifiers: ISSN has been a partner in various initiatives regarding
product identification with GTIN (previously EAN), digital item identification (DOI) and, more recently,
author identification (ISNI). Papers will provide international examples of successful joint implementations
of these standards.

The scientific committee welcomes articles dealing with ISSN issues that are different from those listed above.
